Template Placeholders

By selecting the Placeholder tab of a Template you will be presented with a structure view of the Template.

The topmost level will always read TEMPLATE, indicating that you are looking at a Template structure.

The second level will represent the editable regions, either imported or hand coded, in the Code tab.

The third level represents the Placeholders that hold editable content. You can insert as many placeholders as necessary. The Placeholder item takes the following form:

PlaceholderName (WidgetType) < Default Widget

PlaceholderName is the name you entered for the placeholder when creating it.

WidgetType is the type of the default widget and will limit the selection criteria during replacing within pages.

Default Widget is the name of the default Widget attached to this Placeholder.

The default Widget will automatically be placed on pages that are created with this Template. Changing the default widget after pages are created will not change the related pages to avoid affecting any deliberate replacement of content. If you would like to change all pages that use the Template then delete the desired Placeholder and create a new Placeholder.

Adding a Placeholder

  1. From within the Placeholder tab of a template, right-click on the Editable Region name.

  2. Click on Insert Placeholder.

  3. To the right of the Template structure you will be presented with a selection of Widget types as the default widget for this Placeholder. Click on the type you would like to place.

  4. You will then have the option of either creating a new Widget or selecting from the list of existing Widgets. If you select New then please refer to Editing Widgets. Once edited you will then proceed to the next step. If you select an existing Widget proceed to the next step.

  5. After selecting or creating a new widget you will then be presented with a Placeholder name field. Enter a name using only letters or numbers. Press Enter on your keyboard.

  6. Then new Placeholder will appear under the Editable Region you selected earlier.

Deleting a Placeholder

  1. From within the Placeholder tab of a template, right-click on the Editable Region name.

  2. Click on Delete Placeholder. The Placeholder will immediately be deleted. This cannot be undone.

Sorting Placeholders
You can affect how content appears on a page by sorting the Placeholders within Editable Regions.

  1. From within the Placeholder tab of a template, right-click on the Editable Region name.

  2. Click on Move Up or Move Down depending on the desired action.

  3. Changes made in the sort order will immediately affect how the page is displayed within the CMS but will not affect pages on the Delivery Server until the Template is published.

Editing the Default Widget
You can either edit the default Widget, replace the default Widget or attach a new default Widget within the following steps.

  1. From within the Placeholder tab of a template, right-click on the Editable Region name.

  2. Click on Edit Default Widget.

  3. To the right of the Template structure you will be presented with three options: Edit Widget, New and a list to select from existing. Edit and New will pop-up the Widget Properties window. Selecting from the list will immediately replace the default Widget. Changes made to the default Widget will not carry through existing pages but will affect how new pages are created.

Placeholder Permissions
The Permissions option of a Placeholder lets you define which roles have access to replace the Widget attached to this Placeholder on pages that use the Template. The role must also have permission to edit the Page Properties in order to replace a widget on any given page.

  1. From within the Placeholder tab of a template, right-click on the Editable Region name.

  2. Click on Permissions.

  3. To the right of the Template structure you will be presented with a check box for each role registered in the CMS. Check the boxes next to the role to which you would like to give permission. Remember that giving permission here does not automatically give permission to replace widgets on pages that use this Template. You must give the role permissions to edit the Page Properties as well.

Using Templates
You can begin Adding Pages after you have defined a Template.

CAUTION:
Adding, deleting or sorting Placeholders has an immediate affect on how the pages look within the CMS. These changes cannot be undone.
The changes will not take affect on the Delivery Server until the template is published.
